International Nurses Day Celebrated at Africa Centre
More than 50 nurses from the Africa Centre, K-RITH, the Department of Health and the SA National Defence Force celebrated International Nurses Day.
Addressing nurses and guests, Professor Deenan Pillay, the Director of the Centre, said: ‘We applaud nurses for their continuous endeavours to save lives, often under very challenging working situations.’
Under the slogan: “Nurses: A Force for Change”, nurses were reminded of the healthcare values of care, love and humility. ‘A simple touch of a nurse can make a enormous difference to the sick,’ said Ms Makhosazana Themba, the Health District Manager at uMkhanyakude.
Dr Sifiso Mtshali, the Head of the Department of Health in KwaZulu Natal, emphasised in his address the importance of frequently testing the Public Health Care System in order to identify challenges faced by patients and healthcare workers on a daily basis.
Nurses were honoured for upholding the Nurse’s Pledge and for serving with passion and professionalism.
Ms Thabisile Ngenzeni Mthembu, a nurse at the Africa Centre, was awarded the Professor Philda Nzimande Recognition Award, while Ms Phyllis Sainile Gumede and Ms Mary Duduzile Mngomezulu, also from the Centre, won Mama Dudu Biyela Lifetime Achievement Awards.
